AI Enhances Weather Forecasting for Farmers in India

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing weather forecasting, which is crucial for farmers in India. A collaborative effort between scientists from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago led to the development of an AI-based weather model that successfully predicted a delayed onset of the monsoon this season.

Supporting Farmers Through Technology

India's Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare began providing weather forecasts via mobile phones to 38 million farmers in the northeastern part of the country at the start of the 2025 monsoon season. For the first time, these forecasts offered up to four weeks' advance notice of the beginning of the rainy season, allowing farmers to better time their planting.

Benefits of AI in Agriculture

With AI, farmers gained the option to postpone planting to take better advantage of the rains or to choose different crops. Preliminary surveys indicate that many farmers adjusted their plans based on the forecasts. The AI weather model could pave the way for much more accurate forecasts for hundreds of millions of farmers across the tropics and global south.
