Gemini Deep Think Transforms Scientific Research in 2026

February 11, 2026
Authors: Tang Luong and Vahab Mirrokni

Gemini Deep Think, developed by mathematicians and scientists, addresses research challenges in the fields of mathematics, physics, and computer science.

Achievements in International Competitions

In 2025, Gemini Deep Think reached the gold medal level at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and repeated this success at the International Collegiate Programming Contest, showcasing its ability to solve complex problems. Since then, the model has been applied to more complex challenges across various fields.

Publications and Interdisciplinary Research

Recently, two articles were published demonstrating the use of Gemini Deep Think in interdisciplinary research, resulting in collaborative projects among mathematicians, physicists, and computer scientists.

New Horizons in Pure Mathematics

Research in mathematics requires more sophisticated methods than IMO problems. Gemini Deep Think includes a research agent, Aletheia, which identifies and corrects errors in solutions, enhancing research efficiency. It uses the internet to access complex studies, preventing errors in literature synthesis.

Aletheia has significantly advanced research in mathematics, including autonomous scientific articles and collaborative AI projects. A taxonomy has been proposed to classify AI-driven research by significance, and several works have been submitted to journals, although major breakthroughs have yet to be announced.

Expansion into Physics and Computer Science

Gemini Deep Think is also achieving success in computer science and physics. The second article discusses collaborative models, such as "Advisor," where humans guide AI through iterative cycles. Techniques like "balanced prompts" and code verification are transforming research methods. This is supported by its use in reviewing theoretical computer science papers for the STOC’26 conference.

Significant achievements include resolving bottlenecks in algorithms and economics, as well as breakthroughs in topics like cosmic string physics. These results demonstrate the growing role of AI in research.

The Future of Human-AI Collaboration

Gemini Deep Think, leveraging previous Google achievements, acts as a powerful scientific assistant, transforming workflows by managing search and knowledge verification, allowing scientists to focus on innovation. AI is becoming an integral partner in scientific research.
